lyrics

The wind howled at the washboard sleeping underneath the moon. Our plan was hatched in a briar patch where lovers shook and swooned. Their lips were stained in violet, their tongues tied into knots. To the loamy beds our secrets spread, but we found ourselves soon caught.

So, the banjo called the snare drum. The singer invoked the blues. The electric bass made an upright stand, and the piano lost a tooth. It was a clarion call to bedlam - no horn could be unheard. The devil stood up, kicked off his boots and recited spoken word.

“I am not the dark,” he said, “that burns behind your eyes.”
“You’re helpless, wed to molten lead.“ And fire rains from the sky.
Barefoot on the dance floor, barefoot in the barn.
The wood gets worn to pins and needles. It don't do you any harm.

We splinter, stagger, smile and sway. Some close their eyes and try to pray, but the devil made us stay. The devil got his way. We held our breath, then screamed bereft and the devil got away. He ran down to the jailhouse. Cried, “Boys, it's sink or swim.” He broke the bars, brought down the stars, and he let the weather in. “It'll pour for forty years or more, so ya better grab your hats.” He dug a hole deep underground and laid out his welcome mat.

Sullied, sprained, some still entranced, our senses all but drained. Our souls were cryin' for leaving, but our bodies still remained! Barefoot on the dance floor, barefoot in the barn. The wood gets worn to pins and needles. It don't do you any harm.

I've seen where needy creatures lie, seen eyes that burn like coals. The devil's dice is loaded. Now watch it as he rolls. His hand reflects the river - a straight run clean as cold. He gambles hard with no regard, but the devil never folds.
